He took my hand and led me to our teacher’s room.  I thought that my classmates would stay far away from me and say bad things about me like, “Look at that Japanese.  He’s a thief.”  This was not what I thought would happen.

This was not what I thought would happen.

This (was) not (what) I (thought((would happen)).
TSis (ws) not (C(iS”t) S’ th(V’oug〉O’(((wou hV”

Itakura

relative concatenation(関係詞連鎖)

We feed children who we think are hungry.

(1)  It’s a house (which / that) we feel (that) we might want to buy.

(2)  That’s the man (who / that) I wish (that) I’d married.

(4)  But I have some sherry that they tell me φ isn’t bad.

Syntactic overview (91 p.43)
.     12. Relative constructions and unbounded dependencies  (91 p.63)

Unbounded dependency constructions
Relative clauses belong to the class of unbounded dependency constructions, along with open interrogatives, exclamatives, and a number of others.
The distinctive property of these constructions is illustrated for wh relatives in:.

i     Here’s the notei [whichi she wrote      i ].
ii    Here’s the notei [whichi he said she wrote      i ].
iii   Here’s the notei [whichi I think he said she wrote      i ].

In each of these which is understood as object of wrote:  we are representing this by co-indexinging it with a gap in the position of object in the write clause.

i    Here(’s) the note [which shewrote)]A.
i    Here(Vs) thenSote wO’iihs S’e〈wV’

ii   Here(’s) the note[which) he (said(shewrote)]A .
ii   Here(Vs) the nSo [wO”iici hS’ (sV’addiO’ S”e〈wV”

iii  Here(’s) the note[which)) I (think(he(said(shewrote)]A .
iii  Here(Vs the inSotewO”’icih)S’ (itV’k〉O’ S” siV”〉iO” S”’〈wrV”’

There is a dependency relation between the gap and which, and this relation is unbounded in the sense that there is no upper bound, no limit, on how deeply embedded the gap may be in the relative clause.

Itakura

7.11  Open interrogatives as an unbounded dependency construction
The open interrogative is what is known as an unbounded dependency construction, as illustrated in the following examples:.

i     Whati did he [buy     ]?
ii    Whati did she [say [he bought     ]]?
iii   Whati do you [think [she said [he bought      ]]]?
iv   Whati do you [think [she said [he wanted [to buy      ]]]]?

i     Whatdid he buy)?
i     WOat〈diid Se V

.     3.1 Conditions under which that must or may appear  (91 p.952)

[91 p.953]

When that must be omitted
That is not permitted when the content clause is embedded within an unbounded dependency construction in such a way that its subject is realised by a gap:.

i     She thinks [(that) Max is the ringleader ].                    [that optional]
ii    Who does she think [       is the ringleader ]?          [that excluded]
iii   Max is the one she thinks [       is the ringleader ].   [that excluded]

In [ii] the subject of is the ringleader is realised by a gap linked to who in the superordinate interrogative clause.
The content clause subject is likewise realised by a gap in [iii], where the content clause is embedded within a relative clause.

上の ii では is the ringleader主語who が,iii では the one が, gap       によって想起されます。

ii     Who) (does she think((is) the ringleader?
ii     WS’o)) (does sSe htV〉(O( =’s the rnC’

iii    Max (is) the one () she (thinks((is) the ringleader).
iii    MSx (=)) th oIC(S”)) [IiS’he (V’tk  (O’(=”) the rinC”

12 Relative constructions and unbounded dependencies  (91 p.1031)

3  The form of relative clauses

3.4  Relativisation of an element within an embedded clause

(40)

i
a.   This car is safe.
b.   I want a cari [that     i is safe].

ii
a.   I know [this car is safe].
b.   I want a cari [that I know [      i is safe]].

The difference is that that is obligatory in [ib] but omissible in [iib].  We can thus have a bare relative in case [ii], but not in case [i]:

(41)

i     *I want a cari [      i is safe].                       [gap as subject of relative clause]

ii     I want a cari [I know [      i is safe]].      [gap as subject of embedded clause]

We need therefore to distinguish between relativisation of the relative clause subject and relativisation of an embedded clause subject. The distinction is also relevant in wh relatives, where it has a bearing on the case of the pronoun who, with some speakers allowing an accusative for an embedded subject (%the man whom they say was responsible) but not a relative clause subject (the man whom was responsible):  see Ch. 5, §16.2.3.

     ・It/That is のあと
It was Mary φ told me.
     ・there/here is のあと
.               There’s no one φ works harder than you.
It’s only one φ there is in the shop.

(41)
i
     *I want a cari [      i is safe].

(41)
ii
     I want a cari [I know [      i is safe]].

the man who they say was responsible

%the man whom they say was responsible

the man they say was responsible

(40) ii
b.    I (wanta car [that) I (know((is) safe]A.
.     S (wVn〉ja cOr [[tS”a))S’(kV’n〉O’ =”is) C”

(41)

ii     I (wanta car [ ) I (know((is) safe]A.
.     S((wVnt〉i Oa(S”) S’ (kV’n〉O’ =”)s C”

[91 p.1079]

7  Unbounded dependency constructions

Relative clauses belong to a larger class of constructions known as unbounded dependency constructions. In this final section of the chapter we examine the properties of this more general category of constructions.

7.1  Definition and taxonomy

What is meant by an unbounded dependency construction can be seen by considering a set of examples such as those in [1]:

[1]
i     This is the booki [whichi [she recommended     i ]].
ii    This is the booki [whichi [I think she recommended     i ]].
iii   This is the booki [whichi [I think you said she recommended     i ]].

The outer brackets enclose the relative clause, while the inner ones enclose the nucleus.
The nucleus contains a gap in the position of object of the verb recommended, and this gap is linked to the relative phrase which in prenuclear position.
The relation between the gap and which is comparable to that between an anaphoric pronoun and its antecedent – between, for example, which and its antecedent book.
Which derives its interpretation from book, and the gap derives its interpretation from which: a component of the meaning of all three examples is “she recommendedχ”, whereχ is some book.
We will say, therefore, that the gap is anaphorically linked to which, i.e. that which is antecedent for the gap.

i      This (is) the book[which sherecommended)]A.
i      TSis () the bCook[wO’h sS’he〈recV’

ii     This(is) the book [which)(think(sherecommended)]A.
ii     TSis(i=s) the bCok [wO”hi) S’ (tV’h〉O’iS”〈recoV”

iii    This(is) the book[which)(think(you(said(sherecommended)]A.
iii    TSis(i=) the bCok[wO”’h) IS’ (tV’i〉(O’(S” sV”aid O”iS”’〈recoV”’
.

This (is) the book [which)) I (think(you (said
TShs =) the bCoo [w(o)ic)) ))S’(thV’O’yS” (sV”

(Kim (persuadedher  torecommend|]A.
O” S”’(m (pV”’add〉 O”’(s)  〈recC”’(v)

◯Who do you think he is?
×Do you think who he is?
×Who do you know he is?
◯Do you know who he is?

◯Who do you think he is?

◯Do you know who he is?
の ‘who he is’ ≒ ‘his name’ であり、

×Do you think who he is?

      Do you think his name?

×Who do you know he is?

×Do you think who he is?

Do you sometimes happen to think who he is?
